Robbinsville Reform-Squared is a website dedicated to the grassroots effort to eliminate reform mathematics from our public school curriculum. Reform mathematics (aka fuzzy math) began as a misguided attempt to rectify America's mediocre showing in the Second International Math and Science Test (SIMS). In 1989, the NCTM released a revised standards for mathematics instruction The reform math standards were embraced by educators in nearly every state in the Union, but after nearly twenty years, America still fares poorly in international tests like TIMSS and PISA. The Robbinsville Public School District uses Everyday Math and Connected Math. As you will find if you check out these programs, they present diluted math content, awkward (at best) algorithms, and an overreliance on calculators. Math learning is turned upside down and rendered hopelessly inefficient due to the spiraling nature of the curriculum--the classic "mile wide, inch deep" approach which will ensure our children wind up in remedial college math courses. In a global economy, the inability to compete with international students is a serious handicap. Robbinsville students deserve better! |
